Financial Leadership

When was the last time you celebrated yourself?

Hey Reader!

We're in Thanksgiving month, and it's also my birthday month, with my son's birthday just two days later!
I wish I could tell you November is my favorite month, but I'd be telling you a story. πŸ˜‚
I don't like cold weather, and as a Tennessee girl, I know what's coming!

Anyway, in the spirit of Thanksgiving, I want to ask you something that I don't think we talk about enough.

When was the last time you stopped long enough to recognize something you've accomplished with your money?

I'm not talking about buying yourself something to celebrate.
I'm talking about sitting back and thinking,
You know what? I'm pretty proud of that.

  • Maybe you paid off a credit card.
  • Maybe you made it through a month without moving money around to cover bills.
  • Maybe you finally started setting money aside for Christmas instead of figuring it out in December.
  • Maybe you and your husband sat down and had a money conversation that you've put off for months.

I ask because I remember when Tim and I paid off our home in 2010.
We had worked hard to eliminate $65,000 in debt over 26 months, and paying off that house was a pretty big deal.
Do you know what I did afterward?

I went home and fixed dinner, just like any other day.

No celebration, nothing special, and to this day, I regret not celebrating!

In the last 6+ years of money coaching, I've seen something similar in the women I work with.

They're so busy thinking about everything they still need to do that they hardly notice what they've already accomplished.

I worked with Skye, who struggled to cover her child's tuition and had overdrafted on her utility bills.

Within 30 days of working together, the overdrafts stopped.
Within 60 days, we had her child's tuition funded and a plan for the other expenses that came along with it.
Three and a half years later, she's still free from overdrafts - that was only the beginning of her story!

You might think paying a utility bill without overdrafting your account is just something normal that happens.
But when you've spent months worrying about whether the money will be there,
being able to pay a bill without thinking twice is something worth celebrating!

It makes me wonder how often we do this in other areas of our lives.
We move from one responsibility to the next, one goal to another, and rarely stop long enough to enjoy what we've worked so hard to accomplish.

I know I'm not the only one!

Today, I want you to think about four questions:

  1. What have you accomplished that deserves celebrating?
  2. Why is that important to you?
  3. What did you do to make it happen?
  4. What have you learned about yourself along the way?

I especially want you to think about that last question.

-Maybe you've learned that you can make difficult decisions.
-Maybe you've learned that you don't need to buy everything you want the minute you want it.
-Maybe you've learned that you and your husband can work together on money, even when you don't always agree.
-Maybe you've learned that you're more capable of managing your money than you've given yourself credit for.

Don't get so busy looking ahead that you forget how far you've already come.

Since this is a month of celebration for me, I'd love to celebrate something with you.

Hit reply and tell me one thing you've accomplished with your money, big or small.

And if you're reading this thinking, Melinda, I wish I had something to celebrate, but I'm still trying to get a handle on where our money is going, I want you to know that's exactly the kind of work I do with my private coaching clients.

We look at what's happening with your money, make decisions about what matters most, and build a Financial Leadership Plan you can actually follow.

I currently have openings for 1:1 Financial Leadership Coaching.

If you're ready to stop starting over and start making progress you can celebrate, I'd love to talk.
